Eighth Annual Children’s Choice Book Awards Finalists Announced

Every Child a Reader (ECAR) and the Children’s Book Council (CBC) have announced the finalists in the eighth annual Children’s Choice Book Awards (CCBA), the only national book awards program where the winning titles are selected by kids and teens. Young readers across the country will determine the winners in all 7 categories of the Children’s Choice Book Awards by voting online at ccbookawards.com from Tuesday, March 17, 2015 through Sunday, May 3, 2015. In 2014, over 1.2 million votes were cast online by young readers. Winners will be announced during the 96th annual Children’s Book Week (May 4-10, 2015).

The finalists for the K-2, 3-4, and 5-6 Book of the Year categories were selected by kids through the Children’s Choices Program, a joint project of the International Literacy Association (ILA) and the CBC, in which 36,600+ children from different regions of the United States read newly-published children’s and young adult trade books and voted for the ones they liked best. Teen Book of the Year finalists were chosen by 4,000+ teens via voting conducted by Teenreads.com.

Author visit: Eileen Spinelli

Celebrate Children's Book Week with the Lansdowne Public Library!

Once again the library is pleased to be a host site for Children's Book Week (CBW)!
Children's Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Established in 1919, CBW us the longest running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year events are held throughout the nation: schools, libraries, bookstores, homes...wherever young readers and books connect!

This year we are pleased to share an author visit from Eileen Spinelli!
Mrs. Spinelli is the author of 69 (!) books. Our favorites at the library:

When No One is Watching: Alone a young girl dances and sings but once there are people watching she becomes shy until she is with her best friend and then it doesn't matter who is watching!

The Best Time of Day: The farmer and his family share their favorite time of day.

The Perfect Thanksgiving: Two families celebrate Thanksgiving in very different but special ways.

Moe McTooth: When it's cold alley cat Moe loves being an indoor cat but once spring has sprung he's ready to roam!

You can get to meet Eileen during her visit to the library!
She will be visiting us Wednesday, May 15th at 6PM for a special Sleepytime Tales!

A Few of Our Favorite Books!

Wee Reads was a hodgepodge of activities today! Due to illness we postponed our Children's Book Week activities until today. Ms. Margaret joined us for Polske Bajki, our bilingual Polish/English storytime, and we had a blast reading our favorite books!

We read
Click Clack Moo by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin
As we read Click, Clack, Moo our library friends helped us with 'typing' and mooing.

I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont, illustrated by David Catrow
As we read our library friends helped us by shouting out the body parts that were being painted.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
While reading this book we helped the caterpillar eat his way through the week using a cool puppet that a friend made for us.

For a craft we used a variation of DLTK's Bouncy Caterpillar and made caterpillars and a hybrid caterpillar/butterfly.

Enjoy!

The caterpillar is now a fat caterpillar!

The Rocky Horror Shrek Show!

We celebrated Children's Book Week with a clever take on the movie Shrek. Inspired by the revival on the television show Glee, we combined the interactive nature of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with one of our favorite movies, Shrek!

What is The Rocky Horror Picture Show?
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 British musical comedy film that parodies science fiction and B-movie horror films.

Why The Rocky Horror Shrek Show?
Inspired by an episode of Glee and a love for the original Shrek movie, we thought we could take the interactive part of Rocky Horror and mesh it with Shrek. Despite a small turnout (8 children and three adults) we did have a great afternoon!

We are sharing information with you to create your own Rocky Horror Shrek Show!.
Also, if you have ideas to share, please leave us a comment or e-mail us at lacsd@delcolibraries.org!
The ideas listed below are collected from friends and colleagues.

Please note: the information below assumes that you have previously watched Shrek.

The materials we used to create the experience:
-paper (for airplanes and to make signs.
-gumdrops
-string
-marshmallows (we used Kraft Jumbo Marshmallows)
-shredded paper for confetti

Movie license to show Shrek.

How we interacted with the movie
We left the captions on so that we could read the screen and/ orsing along.

Opening :At true Love’s first kiss we blew a kiss
Sing: All Star
Scare away the Mob: Scream
Donkey flies: Paper airplanes
Sing: All Alone (Donkey)
Who Knows Where Lord Farquaad is: we all screamed "Pick Me! Pick Me!"
When Lord Farquaad is torturing The Gingerbread Man and threatening his buttons: we ate a gum drop button
We all recited the exchange between Farquaad and the Gingerbread Man:
Do you know the Muffin Man?
The Muffin Man?
The Muffin man.
Yes, I know the Muffin Man, who lives on Drury Lane?
She's married to the Muffin man.
The Muffin Man?
The Muffin Man!

When The magic mirror showed Farquaad his choice of bachelorettes we held up signs to pick bachelorette 1, 2, o r 3

Upon arriving in DuLoc we all sang the welcome sign and took a picture
The fight in DuLoc:
Throw yarn, ribbon (the ale)
Cheer Shrek

Rescuing Fiona: we all screamed when we saw the dragon.

Walking in the woods
Fiona sings with bird: Everyone sings (I think if we do this again I am going to pass out bags to pop when the bird explodes)

When Robin Hood 'rescues' Fiona: Subtitles to sing the song

When Shrek, Fiona and Donkey make camp for the night: Marshmallows to eat in lieu of weed rats. (I couldn't find shoestrings for rat tails!)

At the wedding of Fiona and Farquaad:

Signs that read Applause, Awwww! Aaah! Gasp!
Green hearts (they are ogres!) and we made kissy noises.

At Shrek and Fiona's wedding we used shredded paper as confetti.
And of course all sang I'm a Believer.

In the future this will definitely be restricted to ages 10 and up. The younger members enjoyed the food but didn't really care for the interactive part of the performance.
