The Book Bunch is Just Ducky!

We're here for the books!

While the Book Bunch is aimed at children ages 4-7, during summer and school vacations we may relax the rules as attendance mandates. For our meeting this past Thursday, our members of the Book Bunch enjoyed duck themed activities as we read Phyllis Root's One Duck Stuck.

Copies are available at this and other libraries!

After reading the book we learned sign for some of the animals (courtesy of ASLpro):
duck
frog
fish
moose
possum
snake
skunk
snail

Then it was off to the races! Through funding by our generous Friends of the Library Group, we had a rubber duck race. Attendees raced ducks across a water pond (aka a plastic container!) and each participant was awarded a rubber ducks purchased with funds from the donation.

We also drew and colored our own ducks!

Going Batty with The Book Bunch!

Today the Book Bunch was all about Bats!
We read 'Bats at the Beach' by Bryan Lies, learned the sign (courtesy of ASLpro.com) and created our own paper bats to take home with us!
Miss Rachee shared a story from when she was younger about a bat sighting.
If you are interested in bats, here are more books for your pleasure:
Bats at the Library also by Bryan Lies
Bats on Parade by Kath Appelt
Homework Hassles by Abby Klein
For non-fiction titles check out the juvenile non-fiction collection under 599.4.

Friday Morning Live! Presents:Habiba!

Our kickoff to Friday Morning Live was delayed a week due to the mini hurricane/ extreme weather we experienced. We were happy to welcome Habibi from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

We were whisked away from our library in Lansdowne to Egypt as Habiba showed us traditional clothing worn by men and women. She shared anecdotes from her visits as well as her background with the country and the dancing.
Over 70 people enjoyed learning, practicing and watching the traditional dances!

Join us Fridays for throughout the Summer Reading Program for live entertainment.

Today we continued our drop in craft time with guests from The American Historical Swedish Museum. Educator Karin Nordbrandt shared Viking history and artifacts from the museum with our library friends in a program called Set Sail with Vikings!

We learned the history of Vikings, Scandinavian explorers, warriors and merchants who raided, traded, and settled in wide areas of Europe and Asia from the late eighth to the mid-eleventh century.

Karin shared different artifacts as well as facts about the lives of Vikings.

Andrew warming up the crowd!

(From his web site)

Pirates - The Curse of the Mutating Hand (Theme - Liquid & Density) **Summer Reading Theme 2010**
In a time when pirates sailed the seven seas, there was one pirate who was feared the most. His name was Hendricks the Hand and he was cursed with a mutating hand. But this curse gave him power and now seeking to become unstoppable he must return to the place that cursed him…The Black Cave. In an attempt to protect the seas, the famous pirate James Dauer gathered a crew which included quartermaster Sam Sullivan and set sail for The Black Cave! Join us as we learn about the science of Liquid & Density by telling the tale of The Curse of the Mutating
Hand. By boiling water in a paper cup, crushing a can with only water,
creating a mutating hand, and exploding bottles through evaporation, see if
James Dauer can stop Hendricks before its too late!

For our second kickoff, Thursday, June 17th at 10:30 AM Mark Segal helped our group of 78 library friends become Tooth Buddies!

Mark, Silly Billy, Zeebo and other friends taught up proper oral care!

Waiting for the show to start!

We have activity books available for you.
Getting Started
On the reading log you will find 8 activity squares for each week. Complete the 8 squares in any order you would like, checking them off as you go, and return to the summer reading desk to receive your fun reward. You may report only once a week. Parents and children can work together to complete the activities. Parents may read to their children, or if the child is beginning to read, the child may read to the parent.

Activities
Visit the Library and Check Out a Book: Spend some time at the library where you can complete other activities from the log and get into the habit of borrowing books regularly.

Read for 20 Minutes: Read to/with your child for 20 minutes a day. You may want to break this up during the day. Read before or after meals, at naptime or bedtime, or when you visit the library. Make sure you read some library books!
